A homeowner’s guide to getting it right
Choosing a heating and cooling system shouldn’t be confusing. Here’s how we think about it — so you know exactly what you’re paying for, and why.
Which system is right for you?
It comes down to how much of your home you want to condition, your budget, and whether you’re heating, cooling, or both. A quick guide:
Just one room?
A single split system is the simplest, most cost-effective way to heat and cool one bedroom, living room or home office.
A few rooms, but not the whole house?
A multi split runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit — independent control room by room, less clutter outside.
Whole-home comfort?
Ducted refrigerated hides in the ceiling and conditions the entire home evenly, zone by zone — the premium choice.
Mainly worried about winter?
Gas ducted heating delivers fast, even warmth throughout the house; pair it with evaporative or refrigerated cooling for summer.

Why sizing matters more than anything
The single biggest reason a system underperforms is that it was never sized correctly for the space. Bigger is not better — an oversized unit short-cycles, wastes energy and struggles with humidity. Undersized, it runs flat-out and never quite gets there.
Too big
Short-cycles on and off, wastes energy, leaves the air clammy and wears out faster.
Too small
Runs at full tilt constantly, never reaches your set temperature, costs more to run.
Just right
Quiet, efficient, holds a steady temperature and lasts the distance.
We calculate a proper heat load for every job — factoring room size, ceiling height, insulation, glazing and orientation — in line with AIRAH industry guidance. That’s how you get a system that’s quiet, efficient and correctly matched to your home.
What actually happens on install day
Site inspection & heat-load calc
An experienced technician measures up, assesses insulation and glazing, and calculates the correct capacity for your home — not a guess off the floor area.
Clear, itemised quote
You get a fixed quote that spells out the equipment, the work, and the warranty. No vague line items, no surprises on the day.
Professional installation
Licensed technicians and electricians install to ARC and Victorian Builder’s standards — tidy pipework, correct electrical, proper commissioning.
Commissioning & handover
We test the system under load, walk you through the controls, and leave the site clean. Then the 6-year warranty kicks in.
Your warranty, in plain English
Every Cold Bear installation is backed by a comprehensive 6-year workmanship warranty — on top of the manufacturer’s warranty on the equipment itself. Here’s what that means for you:
6 years, workmanship
If anything we installed isn’t right, we come back and fix it — for six full years.
On top of the manufacturer warranty
The equipment carries its own maker’s warranty; ours covers the installation itself.
